The American Gold Eagle is a 22-karat coin, but the Mint adds silver and copper only as hardening alloy — the coin is made to contain exactly 1.000 troy ounce of fine gold. That is why its gross weight is higher (about 33.93 g / 1.0909 troy oz) than its gold content.

Because the fine-gold content is exactly one ounce, the melt value of a 1 oz Gold Eagle is simply the gold spot price. The Gold Buffalo and Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, both .9999 fine, follow the same one-ounce rule.

How the melt value is calculated

Melt value is the value of the metal in the coin, ignoring any collector premium:

melt = spot price per troy oz × weight in troy oz × purity

Where the fine-metal content is known, this simplifies to spot × 1 oz. The live figure at the top of this page applies that formula to the current spot price.

Frequently asked questions

How much gold is in a Gold Eagle?

A 1 oz American Gold Eagle contains exactly 1.000 troy ounce of fine gold, even though the coin's gross weight is about 1.0909 troy oz because of its 22k alloy.

Why does a Gold Eagle weigh more than 1 oz?

It is 22-karat (.9167) gold, so silver and copper are added as alloy. The Mint adjusts the weight so the fine-gold content is exactly one troy ounce.

What is a Gold Eagle worth in melt?

Its melt value equals the gold spot price per ounce, because the coin contains exactly 1.000 oz of fine gold.

Is a Gold Eagle 24k?

No — the Gold Eagle is 22k (.9167). The American Gold Buffalo and Canadian Gold Maple Leaf are .9999 fine (24k) but also contain exactly 1 oz of fine gold.
