Platinum · Bullion & Jewelry
Platinum is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce, but most platinum in the real world — jewelry and small bars — is weighed in grams. This page converts the live spot price to a per-gram melt value.

Live spot via gold-api.com. Melt value = spot × 0.0321507 troy oz of fine metal.
Open the full calculator →Platinum's spot price is quoted per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). To value jewelry or a small bar you need the price per gram, which is simply spot ÷ 31.1035. The live figure above does that, and the table converts any weight from a 1 gram stud to a full troy ounce.
Melt value is the metal alone — it ignores the dealer premium or fabrication cost a new bar or ring carries, and any resale spread. For pure (.9995) platinum bullion, melt value is spot × weight; for jewelry, multiply by the purity (Pt 950 = 95% platinum, Pt 900 = 90%, Pt 850 = 85%).
Platinum trades in a thinner, more industrial market than gold or silver. It is less liquid, and dealers often quote a wider spread under melt — treat the figure above as a ceiling, not a firm quote.
| Symbol | XPT (platinum) |
| Common bullion purity | .9995 fine |
| Common jewelry purity | Pt 950 (95%) · Pt 900 (90%) · Pt 850 (85%) |
| Troy ounce | 31.1035 grams |
| 1 gram | 0.0321507 troy oz fine Pt |
| Quote convention | USD per troy ounce |
Melt value is the value of the metal in the coin, ignoring any collector premium:
Where the fine-metal content is known, this simplifies to spot × 0.0321507 oz. The live figure at the top of this page applies that formula to the current spot price.
Illustrative melt values (per gram) at example spot prices — shown for reference only; the live figure above uses the real market price:
| Example spot | Melt value |
|---|---|
| $900.00 | $28.94 |
| $1,000.00 | $32.15 |
| $1,100.00 | $35.37 |
Divide the live platinum spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035. The figure at the top of this page does exactly that and updates with the market.
Pt 950 is 95% platinum. Multiply the pure-platinum per-gram value by 0.95 to get the melt value of a Pt 950 piece.
One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams — heavier than the 28.35-gram avoirdupois ounce used for everyday goods.
Not always. Platinum and gold have swapped places several times over the decades, which is exactly why melt value should be checked against the live spot price rather than assumed.
This page values one item. The Silver Stacking Spreadsheet keeps the whole record — every coin, what you paid, and your running profit or loss, auto-calculated from the spot price you enter.
