Fine silver bars are .999 or .9999 pure, so — just like gold bars — their metal value is spot price × weight. There is no alloy to adjust for, which makes the arithmetic trivial and the melt value the true floor under the bar's price.

The table above converts the live spot price to the retail-standard weights: 1 troy ounce, 10 ounce, 100 ounce and the 1 kilogram bar (1000 g ≈ 32.15 troy oz). Remember a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, not 28.35 grams.

As with gold, melt value is the floor, not the asking price. A new retail bar carries a fabrication premium above melt — proportionally larger on a 1 oz bar than a 100 oz bar — which a dealer buying it back will not pay. Sell to a dealer and expect melt or modestly under.

How the melt value is calculated

Melt value is the value of the metal in the coin, ignoring any collector premium:

melt = spot price per troy oz × weight in troy oz × purity

Where the fine-metal content is known, this simplifies to spot × 1 oz. The live figure at the top of this page applies that formula to the current spot price.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 10 oz silver bar worth?

A .999 fine 10 oz bar holds 10 troy ounces of silver, so its melt value is the spot price × 10. The live table above shows it, plus 1 oz, 100 oz and 1 kg sizes.

How much is a 100 oz silver bar worth?

A 100 oz bar contains 100 troy ounces of fine silver, worth spot × 100. That is about 3.11 kg of metal.

Are silver bars worth more than melt?

New retail bars sell above melt due to the fabrication premium, but dealers buy them back at or a little under melt, so the premium is not usually recovered.

How many grams is a 1 oz silver bar?

A 1 troy ounce silver bar weighs 31.1035 grams — not the 28.35 grams of an avoirdupois ounce.
